Abstract
The present study investigated a psychological phenomenon, called academic trauma, which Korean students may experience during their schooling. Participants were 228 adults who completed an online questionnaire assessing traumatic experiences related to academic performance, emotions toward learning, symptoms of post-traumatic stress, degree of overcoming traumatic experiences, and open-ended questions related to traumatic experiences. The results indicated that 48.7% of participants had experienced academic trauma, primarily related to ¡®failure of academic achievement¡¯, ¡®enforcement of study¡¯, and ¡®abusive relationships¡¯. These experiences affected participants¡¯ physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. Additionally, participants with academic trauma reported significantly higher levels of anxiety and anger, as compared to those who had not experienced academic trauma. Among those who had experienced academic trauma, 20.7% reported post-traumatic stress and 11.7% reported symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
